Book Review: YOU Raising Your Child by Roizen and Oz

I'll admit it, I think I have a weird little crush on Dr.Oz.  So I was delighted when I saw a copy of YOU Raising Your Child at the library.  Having already gushed here about the pregnancy book in their YOU series, I was eager to review this new book.

Much like their other YOU books, this book is chock full of all kinds of information, from a medical viewpoint.  And again, I really like the tone of this book - it's very lighthearted and positive (comical at some points).    I can't stand child rearing books that are fraught with DANGER-DANGER-EVERYWHERE!!  Like parents don't have enough other sources freaking them out.  And, there is no preaching here, which I appreciate.

The book covers "first breath to first grade", and is arranged fairly loosely - general topics that cover different items, touching on age ranges. All of the major health topics are covered - feeding, skincare, psychological health, sleeping, learning, diseases/illnesses.

From the flap copy:  "With humor and cutting-edge biological insights, the authors address everything from troubleshooting infant health issues to creating an environment that supports the emotional and intellectual development of your growing child. They talk about the various approaches to parenting—are you a Marshmallow Mommy or an Iron Maiden, passive or hyperinvolved? The docs help you identify your style of parenting, encouraging passive parents to create clear boundaries and hypervigilant ones to step back more often and let their kids develop. You will learn to become the ideal parent: firm but flexible. The docs also provide an extensive overview of nuts-and-bolts health problems— from asthma to fevers to emergency room visits and the sensitive issue of vaccinations."

If you are looking for a good, basic book on taking care of your new addition, this one is a reassuring, positive, easy to read choice.
